About

My name is Becky. Food is my passion, and I thank my mom for introducing me to the kitchen at a young age. Because of her and my dad, I was raised to understand the importance of growing one’s own food, and the satisfaction a homecooked meal with homegrown ingredients brings to the dinner plate. From hilling seed potatoes during spring rains to plucking plump tomatoes in the summer sun to scrounging up the last short ‘n sweet carrots before Columbus Day, I was active in the planting, harvesting, preserving, and eating of my family’s food.

Even though I don’t live with my mom anymore, if I visit between the months of April to November, there’s always work to be done outside. And I’m always happy to help her. One, because I enjoy spending time with her out in the gardens (my landlord would prefer I not dig up his backyard to satiate my need to watch things grow). Two, because she is very generous in the bags of veggies she gives me to bring home. So while my green thumb is being suppressed at the moment, the cook in me is blossoming. Someday they’ll both thrive, I just know it.

That’s where this blog comes in. I started it as a space I can retread to after the craziness that consumes any typical day of mine. After surviving the 9-5 grind, maintaining an erratic exercise schedule, cooking tasty, healthy suppers, and spending time with my better half, among the endless other responsibilities of a 24-year old (don’t laugh), what I really craved was an outlet to express myself. And after discovering the wonders of Instagram a few months ago, I decided to branch out into the blogging world.

I can’t imagine there will be any rhyme or reason to “The Farmers’ Market Foodie” blog. Recipe-devising and cooking with the latest market finds with play a huge role, of course, but there will be musings on the local food movement, sustainability, and living well as well, not to mention the occasional story, snippet, and poetic drabble, depending on what’s stirring in my mind at that particular moment. This is not a cookie-cutter blog. This is my blog. Welcome!
